The São Lourenço Fortress is the only military structure known in Portuguese territory that is submerged. The fortress was built in the 17th century (although the cartographic records indicate the presence of ruins from a previous fortress) in the Ria Formosa, next to the old “Barra Grande” replacing the Torre de Marim, in the defensive functions of the entrance to the city of Faro, since the reign of King Dinis.
